The Brazilian electric vehicle market is undergoing a significant transformation, standing out on the global stage. Driven by the entry of imported models, especially from China, Brazil recorded a 492,8% increase in sales of pure electric cars in the first nine months of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023. This growth contrasts with the slowdown observed in other international markets.
International Comparison
While Brazil is experiencing this accelerated growth, other markets are experiencing a slowdown in sales of pure electric vehicles. In China, the increase was 14,2% between January and September 2024, below the 25,6% recorded in the same period in 2023. In the United States, growth fell from 64,1% in 2023 to 17,9% in 2024. Countries such as Germany, Japan and South Korea even recorded declines in sales in 2024, with -28,6%, -25,8% and -4,8%, respectively.
Impact of Chinese Imports
China has established itself as the main supplier of electric vehicles to Brazil. In the first half of 2024, more than 52% of electric vehicles imported by Brazil came from China. This trend was intensified by the European Union's decision to impose new import tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, leading Chinese automakers to direct their exports to markets with lower economic barriers, such as Brazil.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite significant growth, electric vehicles still represent a small portion of the Brazilian market. By September 2024, 45,7 thousand units of battery-powered vehicles had been sold, corresponding to 3,2% of the total number of registered vehicles. In contrast, in the United Kingdom, there were 269,9 thousand units, while in China this number reached 4,2 million.
The gradual resumption of import taxes on hybrid and electric vehicles by the Brazilian government, which began in early 2024, presents an additional challenge. This measure led to an increase in imports of Chinese electric vehicles before the increase in the rates. In the first half of 2024, the number of pure electric vehicles imported grew by 1.800% compared to the same period last year, totaling 68,5 units.
Challenges with the Intensification of Imports
The rapid growth in sales of electric vehicles and the intensification of imports create a challenging scenario for logistics and foreign trade. In this context, it is important to seek solutions that increase efficiency and reduce costs in import processes.
- Simplify freight quotation and purchase: Providing quotations quickly and accurately ensures more competitive negotiations for the automotive sector.
- Analyze routes and costs with AI (Artificial Intelligence): A practice that speeds up equalizations and minimizes errors, making decision-making more assertive.
- Reduce import costs: By applying technology to the quotation and purchasing process, it is possible to unlock up to 19% savings on freight.
